In her West Coast debut, Saalika Khan’s work was featured at The Ashary Foundation’s Art for Impact: Pakistan Flood Relief Art Show, at The Colony House in Anaheim, California, March 2023.
The Ashary Foundation Partnered with the non-profit organization, Akhuwat, in auctioning off the artworks to raise funds to sustainably rehabilitate those affected by the devastating floods in the summer of 2022 brought on the extreme heat waves.
In this series, Rooh: The Levitation of Lungs, Heart, and Hands, Saalika utilizes slow shutter speed on their subject’s movements, dancing against a backdrop of a projector’s video, and then swings in different kinds of prisms to achieve dreamy blurs, as well as a replicated and refracted look.
Saalika was inspired by her home country’s romantically long and flowing garments, her love of Henna, and her Islamic upbringing.
